The Osborn Elementary District (Phoenix) RIF’d to our “worst case scenario” which is a cut of $2.4 million. Half of the music teachers (3) in the district received RIF notices. If Prop 101 does not pass, there will be 1 band, 1 choir, and 1 general music teacher to share 6 schools. If Prop 100 does pass and we do not close a school, there will be 1 band, 1 choir, and 2.5 general music teachers between 6 schools. If Prop 100 passes and we close a school, then all current programs and personnel stay in place. However, the school board has stated closing a school is “not an option”.

No music teachers were RIF'd in Gilbert. However, other special area teachers such as art and Library were. Our big issue was changing the elementary schedule from a six day rotation to a five day rotation. This resulted in reductions for all special areas:

We did get an awesome survey though:

We definitely have amazing parent support in Gilbert.

Greetings! I work for the Chino Valley Unified School District. Last year, our elementary music, art, and P.E. teachers received RIF notices, but were called back. For next school year, all of these position have been cut, because our override election failed.

I am the music teacher at Territorial. We just had a beautiful spring performance of the musical entitled, "Music Class." Ironically, it presented all of the benefits of a solid music education in a factual, yet humorous fashion. My third, fourth, and fifth grade musicians did a fabulous job with this.

Next year, I am transferring to a fourth grade position. The art and P.E. teachers are transferring to the high school. Our other elementary music teacher at Del Rio is moving to Tempe, the art teacher has accepted a position at a charter school in Prescott, and the P.E. teacher is retiring.

That is the condition here in CV. Sure hope the future improves!

As one of the RIFF'd Osborn music teachers, it's hard to process being a 5th year teacher in that district, and knowing I was let go instead of 1st year teachers who teach other disciplines. This is a very bleak time for music.

Our district admin have publicly stated they will protect our music programs and all day kindergarten. This past week over 100 teachers were "riffed". Classes sized have been increased and many fine art secondary programs cut back with teachers traveling in order to be full time. Teacher morale is at an all time low...they are sad, fearful and angry.
